Question for all my contacts in the world of Fire risk assessors, Fire door inspectors even health and safety. My Question is : what would you do? So we were asked to advise a client whereby its for a residential property for kids up to 18 which is run by a local authority. Effectively a HMO for kids. These kids pose a flight risk but it isn't any form of detention centre, they go out to school etc all day everyday. At night the only means of escape is now locked with a "key to key" cylinder which was changed from a thumb turn on the inside due to absconding. We advised a fully compliant solution with an Abloy escape door system to BSEN13637 and as this wasn't acceptable a non compliant system which in the event of a fire would facilitate a single mechanical means of egress. Not compliant ! but would fall into "Best Practice" and written up as part of the risk assessment. The keys are held by 2 members of staff also resident. so the only means of escape in an emergency is for the staff member to use a key to facilitate egress. There is no connection to Fire detection and alarm, access control or other. So if the member of staff is overcome by smoke, fire or god forbid a resident the only means of escape would be lost. #firedoors #safetyandsecurity #safety #firesafety
