Is there anything to be learned about the future of retail from this earnings call? Probably not. Amazon is a category killer, and it is also having a fine quarter. You can’t walk outside in NYC without tripping over a mountain of cardboard boxes with banana smiles on them. But kudos where kudos are due. …see more
For any of my San Francisco friends who can benefit from this meetup on Data-Driven Marketplaces - hosted by Version One Ventures.
The search for causation is, by definition, a grail quest. It is impossibly hard, and there may not actually be a holy grail. Think about this...
for example, on current trends, the global financial system governance as it is designed and implemented is unsustainable. #fintech #finserv #capitalmarkets #financialservices #banking

interesting. apply the necessary tweaks if you are a b2b startup, but direction is essentially the same.
I've seen the upcoming wave of automation dismissed as nowhere near happening and as happening tomorrow. This is a good look at the state of things for the near-term.
Twitter asked “What book/article/podcast etc chanel your mind about something...” and got some mind-altering answers.
Facebook has an enormous amount of power; it is the largest communications platform ever created; and with its size and influence, it must be held to the highest standards. But what does that even mean? Think about this...

Media Buyers Need To Step Up Our Attention is a strange currency — it is valuable — but not to the owner. The value is reaped by the many companies and agencies selling stuff. Trillions of dollars of our Attention have been siphoned off by Coronavirus — Time Magazine's Most Influential Organism of the Year. This crisis should be good news for media companies with skyrocketing audiences they haven't seen since the crisis of Trump's election. But media companies are struggling to survive because advertising budgets are frozen like deer in the headlights of a monster truck. Too bad because the winners emerging from the post-pandemic recession will be the ones that spot the arbitrage opportunities: Buy low --sell high. Buy advertising low -- sell more stuff. It's a win-win for the media companies and savvy advertisers. #digitalmarketing #digitalmarketingstrategy #mediabuying #advertising …see more
How did this work out for Gillette?! There might be fewer CEO's bold enough to take a stand on issues. Employees might want CEO activism but this doesn't mean that CEOs should abide. CEOs that demonstrate ethical and moral leadership will keep their employees happy without having to tackle hot button issues, imho :). …see more
Good article on Marc Benioff by Ari Levy. I'm a huge fan of Benioff but I think he shouldn't need to bash Facebook. That train wreck will take care of itself... https://lnkd.in/ej33QVf #salesforce

Does Facebook have truth-in-advertising policies? Do those policies apply to everyone, or is President Trump “above the law?” Think about this...
Is there one set of ethics for software engineers and another for others? Surely there's only one set of ethical behaviors otherwise bad things would wash (hands) down to the least ethical profession (I'm guessing politician).

The current narrative around technology in Silicon Valley is "just get out of the way of it." Uber is the loudest but iit's a common view. The reason given is because technologies need to find their own water level in society and shouldn't be restricted — such as with sales taxes, etc. But I disagree. We should be very clear about the type of future we want — not a random future. I'm a big fan of Jaron Lanier's book "Who Owns the Future?" But I think it's about "Who Has a Say About the Future." I don't own my apartment but I have a say in how I live in it and what must be provided. We don't need to own the servers and software to determine the future we want and Silicon Valley has a important role in making it happen. Don't get out of the way of technology -- show it the way! …see more
