Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr.'s eloquent #NewYearsDay message in The New York Times offers a clue about why I'm feeling so energized and hopeful at the start of 2019. This year marks the 400th anniversary of the presence of Africans on American soil. I am part of a continuous lineage of horror, brutality, struggle, triumph, hope and courage that endured even when all the forces of the Universe seemed aligned to terminate our existence. I am here to help declare our strength and our dreams. God let me live to see another year, and I will make the most of it, in the name of those "20 frightened, bewildered and beleaguered Africans arrived in Jamestown, Va., as prizes that had been pirated from Spanish ships on the open seas." I vow to honor that journey, and that of the millions of others who perished at sea, and under the whip, and after the rapes, and after the psychological terror. They paid the price for my journey. #EmancipationDay #400Years #Endurance #Persistence #StrengthCourageAndWisdom #AfricanAmericans https://lnkd.in/enXpBE5
