‘Futurologist’ and “Self-defined geek”: just some of the titles I get announced with at several events. When I give a keynote or take part in a discussion as a speaker, the hosts are very careful to use the word “Futurist”. I’m not sure why, as it’s a profession and also a scientific field (futuristic studies). So here you go: I started using this visual more and more because it seems to explain my profession much better: We’re exploring the future just as archeologists explore the past. For archeologists, it’s fossils, dinosaurs, relics and historical data that help create visions about what might have happened (in short), whereas for futurists it's trends, data, scenarios and foresight that helps depict visions about the future (also in short).
