So, I am staying Sheraton hotel Security in Pasadena. There was a voice: Emergency Evacuate. I had been sleeping but out I went. I had my key and cell phone. Should have taken my wallet with 50/50 hindsight. Sadly, I have had to evacuate buildings in other situations. Here, there were no hotel personnel directing people. Some of us on the side were close to building. Had there been a fire or bomb, we surely would have perished. And then we lead ourselves (no personnel) away from building to street. No hotel personnel. Not one person. When we got to front, a manger was there saying: false alarm. Seriously, when I said there were no personnel on side, he lied. He said there was someone— a doorman. There wasn’t. No Sheraton’s for me ever again. Not trained in emergency management. I am a trauma expert and there was ZERO preparedness. Yipes. Bad bad bad. Ironic because there was a note under our doors saying there would be drills Wednesday — Friday. Don’t get me started on cars leaving parking lot following a concert. Part 4 of 3: Okinawa to Vancouver to LA Now in Vancouver, headed to LA. Reflecting on catching back the day I “lost”. Many thoughts; there never was an intended Part 4. But I have some remaining thoughts (perhaps jet lag induced): 1. I get the many benefits of travel. But, both the mind and body need to be in the same place for a while to re-center. That’s why I planned an extra day in LA. I can tell it’s needed before I give a workshop. If I did it tomorrow, it would be a fiasco. Hot tea and a shower; simple needs. 2. There’s been lots for sale in every airport — duty free and not. Guess having a captive audience encourages sales. So does the desire to hold something or have something to trip off memories. And even if duty free is not cheaper, it sounds cheaper. 3. We falter with transitions — from job to job, school to school, nation to nation. We’d do well to focus on how to make folks feel welcomed to a new nation and welcomed home after a long trip. Signage matters. Friendly faces. 4. Customs dude in Canada asked where I was coming from. Since when? Last flight? Place of origin. Over the last week? And then the question: was travel for business or pleasure? Why either/or? Can’t it be both? I’m a touch cranky.
