In the end I think true personal and professional success is about an attitude change, working smart and prioritizing life as much as we do work. Traditional thinking will bring traditional headaches. And who likes headaches?

As this steaming garbage dumpster fire of a year draws to a close, I'm so glad I bought myself some insurance before it began. When I chose a 2020 day planner with the word "Blessed" on it, I couldn't have foreseen how necessary it would be to focus on that word every single minute of every day. Surviving the specter of COVID-19, staying afloat after being laid off, coping with isolation, year-end dental drama --through it all, I had a daily reminder that I am blessed. So for the new year, I've doubled down. I need some adventure in 2021. I hope to travel again, to someplace I've never been. And I'll always keep dreaming. With this gift of Life, I know I can make it happen. But just in case.....I'm soaking my black eyed peas. #NewYearsEve #NewYearsResolution #AttitudeofGratitude …see more

The term "career-defining moment" gets tossed around quite a bit, but I think today may be one for me. From my birth in one of the most notorious racially-divided towns in the American Midwest until today, the arc of my #journalism career has outlined my personal quest to shine light on the darkness of fear and ignorance, to elevate the voices and challenges of the vulnerable, and to amplify issues related to #socialjustice , #racism and #economicinclusion . That's why I'm greatly privileged to be reporting on the 57th anniversary of the #MarchOnWashington for National Geographic . America's current state of turmoil and protest against systemic injustice is a defining moment, and I'm eager to bear witness to the reasons that people feel compelled to participate in this event during a #pandemic . I hope my late mother and father Eloise and Lewis Jones would be proud of me in this moment. I'm definitely impressed by my own staying power in the field of #journalism . Never before has the term #bearingwitness meant so much to me. #careers #careerstory #journalismmatters #MarchOnWashington2020 #CommitmentMarch …see more

Around the world, around 300,000 women die from complications in pregnancy or childbirth each year, 2.5 million babies die during the first 28 days of life, and just as many are stillborn. The vast majority of maternal and newborn deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in sub-Saharan #Africa and Southeast #Asia . One way to address these statistics is to build the capacity of health workers when managing childbirth emergencies. The #SafeDeliveryApp , a smartphone application developed by the #MaternalFoundation in partnership with the Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen and the University of Southern Denmark aims to do just that. Through simple, intuitive animated instruction videos, drug lists, and quizzes, the Safe Delivery App guides health workers in how to handle the most common childbirth emergencies. #Menstruation isn't an easy topic to explore on social media, but I was pleased to see this post on Facebook , about a group in #Carterville , #Illinois that's confronting the topic head on. No one person can save the world. But every person in the world can try to make a positive difference. For #MondayMotivation , I tip my hat to the group Steady On for partnering with the ladies of #CartervilleFirstPresbyterian to offer an afternoon tea to talk about the issue of #periodshame , and to try to raise funds to help reduce period shame in #ElSalvador with reusable, sanitary feminine hygiene kits distributed by the Days for Girls International organization. On my LinkedIn page and in my freelance writing and consulting work, I try to contribute by sharing #globalhealth , #reproductivejustice and #globaldevelopment information. Nearly 600,000 followers later, I feel like I'm making a difference. I can't find jobs for all the young people who contact me. I don't own a company, so I can't hire anyone. I can only hope that my journey and my desire to inform will help grow the army of global citizens who understand there's more to connect us than separate us. Thanks for sharing the information, Matt Baughman . #girlsandwomen #genderjustice #reproductivehealth …see more
