At 11 years old, Duane's mother put him into care. At 14 he was expelled from school, finishing his education with no qualifications. At 19, he was arrested trying to smuggle 6,500 ecstasy tablets from the U.S. into the UK and was sent to prison. But his story doesn't end there. Duane Jackson used every bit of adversity he faced and turned it into an unwavering drive to prove everyone wrong ~ to succeed when he had been set up for failure... Having taught himself how to code, he went on to found his first tech startup on release from prison and, 10 years later, sold it for... £20 million. He sold his second startup too and now he’s working on this third, whilst also working with Code4000 as co-founder and NED - an organisation which teaches prisoners to code. Seven years ago... I self-published my first book which I wrote on maternity leave. Early on, I signed a book deal but as soon as the publisher started wanting to change elements I thought were important, I knew I had to stay with my gut and try self-publishing. I believed that if I was going to be spending time away from my baby in order to help tell the stories of these founders, then it had to be done in a way I truly believed in or the sacrifice would not be worth it. Three years later, I wrote another book - Female Innovators at Work - and published through a traditional publisher. I still believe the self-publishing route was a much better way to go for a myriad of reasons which I’m happy to share if it’s useful to you. As a child, I was taught, "Whoever takes a life is considered a destroyer of the whole world. Whoever saves a life is considered to have saved the whole world." This was my grandfather's interpretation of a passage in the Talmud (a book of rabbinic discussions about Jewish law, ethics, etc.). He was a Depression Era doctor, and from his perspective, any untimely death meant the world would be deprived of a righteous soul or a beloved child or parent or maybe even the next potential Mozart or Einstein. He worked his entire life trying to help others.
