Hulu leveraged deepfake technology to create a commercial during the pandemic. If you watch the spot you can see it isn't perfect but you can expect to see more and more of this. If you want to play around with this yourself, there is an app called RefaceAI that will allow you to swap your face onto celebrities in GIFs and videos. And while it's fun, keep in mind technology is never just used for good. #AI #deepfake #deepfakes #reface #hulu #marketing #advertising …see more

Loneliness was epidemic. Then the pandemic hit, leading to widespread isolation from others that affects us mentally and physically. But there is much we can do to feel connected: sometimes all it takes is to stop and smell the garlic.

As I read this article posted below, in addition to my thoughts about the survivor and his courage, I kept thinking about the paramedic -- a veteran. And the vet's skills saved Mr. Mika. For real. And, yet, we make it so so difficult for vets to gain degrees and license in health fields that use their battle won experience. Wouldn't you want this paramedic in your ER? We must do better enabling the transfer of skills from military service to civilian credentials. And, ask: Would the VA hire this paramedic? I think not because he doesn't have the right paper credential. He had the right credentials for Mr. Mika and he has them for me: experience in moments of extraordinary danger. Surely we can do better and use the talents of those who fought for our liberty abroad. …see more

Cruise is going to be testing self-driving cars (without anyone behind the wheel) in San Francisco shortly. Not that the sunny, flat, and wide streets of Phoenix aren't a challenge but this city will be a true real-world test. Lest you think the plant-based meat movement is going to remain niche, not only is Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods gaining mainstream traction, Jack in the Box is trialing their Unchicken Sandwich, and now grocery chain Kroger just announced an expansion of their offerings as well. And to be clear, none of these products are designed just for vegans. In fact, they're aimed primarily at people who eat meat but are wanting to cut back. And it is just getting started. #veganbusiness #veganfood #impossiblefoods #impossibleburger #beyondmeat #kroger #groceryindustry #wholefoods #sprouts #jackinthebox #fastfoods …see more

This is what dying industries that don't know how to react to consumer trends do. They file absurd lawsuits over words. Just like the dairy industry's failed fight against non-dairy drinks using the term milk, trying to prohibit companies like Tofurky from using "burger or "sausage" is ridiculous. But more importantly, even if they win, it will do nothing to stop the trend of more people becoming flexitarian or switching to a plant-based diet. A complete waste of time and money not to mention a clear signal that they are out of ideas. #strategy #plantbaseddiet #tofurky #fakemeat #beyondmeat #impossiblefoods #futurefood #plantbased #wholefoods …see more

I have been doing a lot of thinking lately about how the government spends money -- how it allocates its dollars (our dollars). I have been struck by the no-bid Cerner contract with the VA to move to electronic health records which is estimated to cost $16 billion. No typo. See: https://lnkd.in/e-bR3RW . So, here's my question: What can you get for $16 billion if we had other spending priorities? What disease could we cure for that amount? Could we have universal early childhood education for that amount? We have legislation with mandates that are unfunded; suppose we looked at some of those to fund? A recent NY Times piece noted the proliferation of child pornography on the web and the absence of sufficient resources allocated to stomping out this problem. The legislation exists; the dollars don't. Bottom line: How can a private company get a $16 billion no bid contract when we have so many other needs? Ask yourself: What can $16 billion buy? …see more
